Book Cadillac Hotel
Detroit, MI
The Book Cadillac Hotel, built in 1924, once was one of Michigans most renowned luxury hotels. Alas, the building died a slow and painful death throughout the 1980's when no funds could be raised for necessary restoration work.
Because of its prime downtown location, the roof provides a breathtaking view of the metropolitan skyline and the Detroit River. Although the elevators seem to be out of service, climbing up the 30 stories is well worth the effort. The hotel also has a semi-courtyard proven to be suitable for rappeling.
Many artifacts were left behind when the building was abandoned, including a blueprint of the Cadillacs second story.
Other items found include a bouquet of plastic flowers; several hundred books stacked in a mildewed, mountainous heap; file cabinets with former employees photo IDs; and lovely linen stationery.
The hotel rooms are now a haven for birds, which like to settle on the remaining pieces of furniture and flutter up when least expected. Many of the windows are still intact, yet on the whole there is inadequate protection from the elements. Some of the rooms have become unique biospheres, making the Cadillac one of the few known luxury hotels with large mushrooms sprouting from the carpeting.
